The authors have retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 28 patients with arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) who had been treated at their institution. Thirteen patients had previously undergone embolization. A definitive embolization could be performed in all 28 patients. The first 23 of these patients were treated with the endovascular technique. The latter five were treated with the conventional, standard embolization technique because of their vascular anatomy. There were six patients with multiple AVMs. Two patients with AVMs associated with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia were also included in the study. Four of the patients had bilateral lesions. Embolization with detachable balloons was the primary mode of treatment in six patients. Coil embolization was performed in five patients, and two patients were treated with a variety of other devices. Selective catheterization was performed in two patients to treat accessory arterial feeders. There were two complications related to the procedure. One patient developed a groin hematoma on the day of discharge, and the other patient developed a groin hematoma in the immediate postoperative period. Both patients recovered without sequelae. Follow-up imaging studies were performed on 23 of the 28 patients to assess for recanalization and angiographic obliteration. Of these, 16 had follow-up angiography performed at more than six months. Ten of the 16 patients had follow-up angiography at seven to 12 months after treatment be359ba680
